Different Types of Renewable Energy

Renewable energy is a type of energy that is collected from naturally replenishing resources that don’t run out. This can include sources such as rain, wind, waves, sunlight and geothermal heat. They are a great method to help the environment, as they don’t use up the resources of the planet like fossil fuels do. But what are some of the different types of renewable energy?

Read on to learn more about renewables.

What Isn’t Renewable?

Fossil fuels are not a renewable resource and are bad for the environment as they will eventually run out and release poisonous carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Wood is sustainable if it comes from a forest that is sustainably managed, but if not it is not renewable.

Renewable Energy Sources

Solar

Solar energy works by harnessing the power of the sun and is one of the more popular types of renewable energy, due to sunlight being abundant and available everywhere. Solar energy can vary depending on location, season and time of day but by using a solar energy system with a battery attached, energy can be stored for times when there is less sunlight to harness.

Hydro/Tidal

Hydro power is usually made by building a dam or barrier that will channel water to drive a turbine. It is a very reliable source, as the flow of water is usually constant and not dependent on weather conditions like solar or wind. It’s usually used as a commercial energy source but can also be used domestically.

Tidal energy works similarly, harnessing the power of tidal currents to drive turbines. While it isn’t a constant flow like with hydro power, tidal patterns are very predictable, making it easy to make the most of them.

Geothermal

Geothermal works by harnessing the natural heat that is below the earth’s surface. Its effectiveness depends on location, with some countries having geothermal energy more readily available than others. Geothermal energy can either heat properties directly or be used to generate electricity.

Wind

Wind farms are an increasingly popular feature cropping up around the world, focusing on using wind to spin turbines and drive generators. They are currently not a domestic option, but you can still benefit from the power made from wind turbines as the electricity is funnelled into the National Grid.
